Our time, energy and financial investments have been directed towards building a plan for the site that will help power our community's future and accelerate our digital future.

Homer City will be transformed from a decommissioned coal power plant into a more than 3,200-acre campus that will include natural gas-powered data-centers designed to meet the growing artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) needs of the innovative technology companies shaping America’s digital future.

This transformation will accelerate the state and local community’s ability to meet the needs of today’s rapidly shifting energy landscape while providing an unprecedented level of economic opportunity not just for Indiana County, but for all of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region. The campus will help shape America’s digital future while positioning the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an AI and energy leader.

Over the next few months, our focus will continue to be on demolition and reclaiming the site to ensure it is ready for construction and redevelopment to meet the future demands for the generation of electricity and to spur the economy forward.

HCR has been and will continue coordinating with our regulatory oversight agencies, including the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, which has been an exceptional partner in executing this project responsibly, timely, effectively and, above all, safely with us every step of the way.

The Homer City Redevelopment site is positioned near many of the community’s most cherished natural areas. How will the new site ensure that these natural areas remain intact?

We live in this community too, and we understand the importance of Western Pennsylvania’s natural resources. We take seriously our responsibility and stewardship to ensure the safety of natural areas and resources near the site and that they remain healthy and thrive as the site redevelops and transforms.
Homer City Redevelopment (HCR) has met with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) several times and expects to do so continuously throughout every phase of the project. The DEP, under the direction of Governor Shapiro and Secretary Shirley, have been outstanding partners, and HCR has been working closely with their Harrisburg and Northwest Regional staff on timely permitting regulations, execution and planning.
HCR has been and will continue coordinating with our regulatory oversight agencies on all required permitting and regulatory project processes. The HCR team is collaborating with partners, policymakers and regulators to advance the project with stewardship at the forefront. We will continue to pursue the necessary compliant approvals to achieve the transformational outcome we have planned.

What areas is the new Homer City Redevelopment site going to serve?

The Homer City site is uniquely positioned 50 miles east of Pittsburgh and within 300 miles of major metropolitan areas in New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Columbus and Cleveland. With increased electricity generation capacity, the Homer City Energy Campus is poised to supply power to thousands of homes on the local grid while also supporting multiple large data center customers.
Energy production at the new Homer City Energy Campus will rely on natural gas produced in the Marcellus Shale Region of the U.S. As the project moves forward, we will have more details to share.

Is Homer City planning to use the generation on-site, or will excess capacity go onto the grid?

The Homer City Energy Campus is expected to serve multiple large data center customers and supply power to thousands of homes on the local grid. As the project moves forward, we will be able to share additional details about its capacity and the areas that it will serve.
Homer City Redevelopment has connections to both the PJM Interconnection, L.L.C. (PJM) and New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) systems. The new site will implement improved technology, which is anticipated to grow power capacity and make power generation cleaner and more efficient.

What are the economic impacts of the Homer City Redevelopment site?

The Homer City Energy Campus is expected to create more than 10,000 direct on-site construction-related jobs* along with approximately 1,000 total direct and indirect permanent high-paying positions** in technology, operations and energy infrastructure.
The Homer City community, Indiana County and the region are looking at an initial capital investment projected to exceed $10 billion for power infrastructure and site readiness, with data center development to inject billions more – making this the largest capital investment in the history of Pennsylvania.

Delivery of up to 4.4 gigawatts (GW) of power to support AI-driven hyperscale data centers, while reducing CO2 emissions by 60–65% per megawatt hour compared to the former coal plant.
Deployment of numerous previously secured long-lead power components coupled with sufficient generating capacity to serve multiple large data center customers and supply power to thousands of homes on the local grid.
Creation of more than 10,000 direct on-site construction-related jobs* along with approximately 1,000 total direct and indirect permanent high-paying positions** in technology, operations and energy infrastructure.

When will the project be completed?

While a number of factors ranging from regulatory processes to labor availability to bad weather can impact the timeline, we expect construction of the site to commence this year and expect the first turbine deliveries from GE Vernova to begin in 2026. We expect to begin producing power by 2027. 
We are fortunate that much of the critical infrastructure for the project is already in place from the legacy Homer City plant, including transmission lines connected to the PJM and NYISO power grids, substations and water access.
